SUMMARY: Oh Omnipotent consort of Sri Lakshmi, Sri Narayana, you may be residing in the holy place of Kumbhaghona, concealing your Bow called #Sharnga; even then, people will identify you, the most radiant and dazzling Lord, as Sri Narayana.

Ghruta signifies an earthen pot or urn and Kumbha refers to the neck of the pot. Sri Vadirajaru is telling here that even if Lord Narayana hides inside an earthen pot, below the neck of the pot and hides his famous Bow called Sharnga, people will not fail to recognize him because he is so radiant. The radiation of Lord Narayana at Kumbhaghona is so powerful that even Lord cannot fully become incognito or hide himself in any manner.

SUMMARY: Oh #Lord #Sharngapani (one beholding the bow called Sharnga), you have killed all the demons, who had burdened the Earth with their heavy weight, and protected all the human beings; now, the target of your great bow Sharnga and the arrows is the sins committed by human beings.

Lord Vishnu incarnated several times to reduce the weight on Mother Earth by killing the demons and those who were tormenting the Rishis, Munis, Saints, the spirituous and the righteous. At present, there are no virtual Asuras or demons. However, the Asuras are now in the form of various sins that every human being commits, knowing or unknowingly. Sri Vadirajaru is appealing to Lord Vishnu in this stanza to cleanse the sins and pave the path of providence or Moksha with the same holy bow called Sharnga and the lethal arrows that had killed several Asuras on several occasions.

In Hindu epics, the present Kumbhakonam has been referred as Kamakoshneepura. At present, both Kumbhakonam and #Kumbhaghonam are in vogue.

According to the legend, before commencing the creation, Lord Brahma kept the gift given to him by Lord Hari in the form of nature inside the cosmic earthen pot and had kept that pot in this place, i.e. Kamakoshneepura or the present Kumbhakonam.

There is another more popular legend attached to Kumbhakonam. Lord Brahma once performed a holy sacrifice. Impressed with the devotion of Lord Brahma, Lord Rudra appeared in front of the former and presented him with an earthen urn containing Elixir. Lord Brahma kept the elixir-filled pot in a place, which is now popular as Kumhaghona or Kumbhakona. There was a small hole near the nose or slightly above the neck of that Earthen Pot. The elixir began flowing out of the pot through the tiny hole. The region where the elixir fell in small drops became wet. The elixir flew across the region up to a distance of five Kroshas or Haradari. Therefore, this place came to be known as Kumbhakona.

The place is well connected through surface transport facility. Kumbhakonam is on the banks of Kaveri. There are five very popular temples here, namely Kumbheshwara, Sharngapani, Nageshwara, Ramaswamy and Chakrapani.

According to another legend, once Sage Bhrugu wanted to know who among Vishnu, Brahma and Rudra was greater. When he went to Vaikuntha, Lord Vishnu pretended as though he had not seen Sage Bhrugu. Enraged by this attitude, Bhrugu Rishi kicked Lord Vishnu on the chest. Sri Lakshmi was surprised by seeing Vishnu engaged in worshipping Bhrugu Rishi, who actually deserved a curse. Lakshmi Devi descended on Earth and lived here, as a daughter of a Rishi called Hema. Unable to bear the nostalgia after the departure of Lakshmi Devi, Sri Narayana came down to Earth, married the daughter of Sage Hema. The form worn by Lord Vishnu to marry Hema is said to be Sharngapani.

Sri Sharngapani Temple of Kumbhakonam is one of the largest temples in Tamil Nadu, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This is also considered to be one among the Pancharanga temples. Medieval Cholas, Vijayanagar rulers and Nayaks are said to have contributed to the architecture of this temple, historically. There is no second thought or opinion about the fact that this is one of the most ancient temples of South India.
