Srirama directs Bharata to relieve the people of
Kekaya from terrorists/
Once, Yudhajit, maternal uncle of Srirama and king of
Kekaya State, sent a Brahmin to Srirama. Born in Angirasa Gotra and named as
Gargya, that Brahmin meets Srirama, hands over rich gifts sent with him to
Srirama and conveys the message of Yudhajit:
“Oh Lord, there is a country called Gandharva on both
the sides of Sindhu River. In that country, there is abundance of fruits and
other food items that are essential for the animals. In this rich country,
about three crore children of a Gandharva called Shailusha are living. They
have defeated all the kings and are troubling the righteous. Oh kind-hearted
Protector, please kill these three crore demons and save the lives of the
righteous. You may annex that country with your kingdom. None except you can
accomplish this task. This is what your maternal uncle has appealed to you
through me.”
Srirama heard what the Brahmin said, patiently, and
replied: “Oh Great Brahmin, I will send with you Bharata and his two children
Taksha and Pushkala. Let my maternal uncle fight against the demons and kill
them under the command of Bharata and his children. Later, let Bharata divide
the Gandharva country into two parts, install his two sons as kings of those
two nations and return.”
As ordered by Srirama, Bharata took his two sons and a
huge army with him to Kekaya. He had to walk about one-and-a-half month to
reach Kekaya. After getting honored by Yudhajit, Bharata waged war against the
Gandharva-demons. The battle lasted for almost seven days. On the seventh day,
Bharata shot an arrow called Samvarta and killed all the Gandharvas, instantly.
Gods and deities created a rain of flowers on Bharata in appreciation. The
country was divided into two parts. One part was named as Takshashila and
Taksha was installed as the king of hat country. Pushkala was made the king of
the other half called Pushkalavarta. Bharata lived there for five years,
returned to Ayodhya and saluted Srirama.
Srirama looked at Angada and Chandraketu, the two sons
of Lakshmana and expressed his desire to make them kings of a certain region.
Bharata suggested that a rich country called Karupatha could be governed by
Angada. The city of Angadeeya in Karupatha can be the Capital of that kingdom.
Another large city called Chandrakanta in Mallabhumi could be the capital city
of the kingdom to be ruled by Chandraketu.
Srirama was pleased with the suggestion and at his
behest, Lakshmana took his two sons to the respective cities, installed one
each in the specified city. He was with his children for about a year.
Impressed with their governance, Lakshmana returned to Ayodhya.
