SUMMARY: This Narayana, who drives away the fear in human beings,
appeared in the form of a Lion wearing a fearsome, angry and cruel face, a body
shining with radiation of the disc/wheel and very strong, with which he cut the
body of Hiranyakashipu, in a moment.
In this stanza, two incarnations of Sri Narayana find mention. The first
one is that of Sri Narasihma in which Sri Narayana protected Prahlada by
killing Hiranyakashipu, a very strong king and father of Prahlada. The second Avtar
referred in this stanza is that of a Tapasa, a person incessantly doing
penance. In Sanskrit, Tapas means penance. This relates to the form in which
Lord Hari relieves a king tusker.
Sri Narasihma incarnation is also known as Purushottama. For Narasihma
form, the reading should be:Narasihmaha, pratiGhOdayE naKharachakratEjasA and
for Tapasa form, it should be read as Narasihmaha, pratiGhOdayEna
naKharachakratEjasA.
The form in which Lord Hari bestows salvation of tusker king is known as
Tapasa form or incarnation:
