SUMMARY: Oh
Thungabhadre! You are filled with very sweet water. If your water
was not really
sweet, what reason would have prompted Sri Vishnu, who wears
holy waters in
his feet, to wear you in his tusks?
Since
Thungabhadra originates from the tusks of Sri Varaha, an incarnation of
Lord Hari, Sri
Vadirajaru has praised the river in this jocular way.
Sri Vitthala of

SUMMARY: “Oh
Vitthala! The feet you possess are those that had been tied by
your Mother Yashoda
for stealing butter and other things; later, you barged into
the Hearts of
scholars of spirituality, stole their sins and got arrested by them;
While travelling
on the banks of Bheemarathi River, you were caught by Sage
Pundareeka, who
addressed you as Gopikajara (one who stole the virginity of
Gopikas); you
wore different forms and ‘earned’ the titles such as “thief”,
“Characterless”
and so on; however, you continued to fulfill the desires of
Devotees and
journeyed to the banks of Thungabhadra to stay here. Now, if you
do not bless me
with salvation or a place in the heavens, I will declare the stories
of theft and capricious
acts in the open.”
Sri Vadirajaru
has recalled the childhood mischiefs enacted by Sri Krishna when he
was under the
care of Yashoda in Nandagao. Sri Krishna used to steal butter and
once he stole
dresses of young girls, who were having bath in the river. The
intention was to
make them discard the habit of removing clothes while having
bath in public
places. All those girls were loving Krishna as a divine person.
Sri Krishna is
called Navaneetachora for stealing butter. He steals the sins of
devotees and
relieves them from the cycle of birth and death. Sri Vadirajaru says
that Sri Krishna
assumed the form of Vitthala to escape from the ‘passionate titles’
that the
devotees may adore him with by calling him Navaneetha Chora, GopikA
JAra and so on
and reached the banks of Thungabhadra to stay there as an
incognito.
Historically,
Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagar Empire. The most popular of
this empire Sri
Krishnadevaraya has constructed the temple of Sri Virupaksha at
Hampi. According
to sources, Sri Vadirajaru was a contemporary of Sri
Krishnadevaraya.
In his next
stanza, Sri Vadirajaru describes Sri Virupaksha.
