SUMMARY:
Oh Goddess Kamakshi, I surrender unto your feet forever; Lord Shiva added
another eye on his forehead only to see your ocean-like charm.
It is a
known fact that Lord Shiva has a third eye. Sri Vadirajaru is stating here that
Lord Shiva specially added another eye on his forehead to have a more
comprehensive look at the beauty of Goddess Parvati or Kamakshi.

SUMMARY: Oh
Goddess Girija, daughter of the King of Mountains, Lord Shiva, who resides in
the Himalayas, begot two children from you, despite burning God of Love,
Manmatha, into ashes; as though he was afraid for destroying the sensuousness,
he made one of his sons into the Destroyer of Obstacles (Vighnahara), Lord
Ganesha and Oh Kamakshi, he made another son to be fed by six mothers.
Sri
Vadirajaru again praises the charm of Goddess Parvati in a different way in
this stanza. Lord Shiva, so thinks Sri Vadirajaru, might have felt that the
youthful charm of Goddess Parvati or Kamakshi would fade after giving birth to
two children and therefore ensured that Shanmukha was breast-fed by six
mothers.
Kanchi
Kamakshi temple, which more popular as Kanchi Kamakshi Amman Temple, is
considered to be one of the seven Shakti Peethas in India and the only Shakti
Peetha in South India.
Sri
Kanchi Kamakshi temple is flanked by Shiva Kanchi on one side and Vishnu Kanchi
on the other.
It is
believed that Kanchi Kamakshi temple is existing from time immemorial. Sri
Shankaracharyaru is said to have consecrated a Sri Chakra in this temple, which
indicates that the temple was there about 1600 years ago, as documented by the
Archaeological experts.
According
to another source, there are about 51 Shakti Peethas in India and Kanchi
Kamakshi Temple is one among them. Goddess Sati incarnated as Kamakshi to
destroy a demon called Bhandasura. After killing the demon, she assumed the
form of a young woman and sat in this temple. The idol is believed to be
auto-manifested. The name Kamakshi is interpreted differently by some scholars.
According to them, KA refers to Goddess Saraswati and Ma refers to Lakshmi. The
Goddess with two Akshis or eyes, one each representing Saraswati and Lakshmi,
came to be known as Kamakshi. It is also said that Kama means lust and the eyes
of Kamakshi is very powerful and destroys ‘lust’.
Goddess
Sati, who was yearning to marry Lord Shiva, did penance by standing on a single
foot, that too on a needle point. An image of Kamakshi in gold existed in this
temple in the past and was shifted to Thanjavur since there was a threat of
attack on the temple. The golden image is still in Thanjavur, it is said.
Sage
Durvasa, known for his short temper, was once cursed and he could overcome the
curse only after offering prayers and worship to Goddess Kamakshi. He has authored
a work known as Durvasa Samhita, which is also known as Soubhagya Chintamani,
where he has set forth the manner in which Goddess Kamakshi should be
worshipped. It is said that the same pattern of puja is followed in this temple
even to this day.
It is
also believed that Dasharatha performed the Putrakameshti Yajna at Kanchi,
specifically on the Kamakshi temple premises and hence worship offered to
Goddess Kamakshi in this temple by childless couple begets children.
