Sri Raghavendra Swamy Virachita
SRI #RAMACHARITRYA #MANJARI
After hearing the ‘public views’ Srirama summoned
Bharata and Lakshmana and explained that the ‘public’ was unhappy with his readmission of Seetha Devi as his wife. He
praised Seetha for her purity, loyalty, virginity and chastity. However, he said
public outrage frothed to hell and other bad repercussions. Srirama told
Bharata and Lakshmana that he had no option except ‘discarding’ Seetha Devi.
Srirama ordered Lakshmana to take away Seetha Devi and abandon her in the
outskirts of Ayodhya the next morning. He ruled that none should act against
his will.
Lakshmana accepted the orders, asked Sumantha to keep
the chariot ready the next morning. He met Seetha Devi and told her: “Dear
Mother, it seems you had requested Srirama to make her visit a few sages and
Rishis. Therefore, he has ordered me to take you to the places where sages and
Rishis are living. You may kindly get ready for the journey.”
Seetha Devi, who was then pregnant, expressed
happiness over the opportunity Srirama, had extended to her to see a few sages
and Rishis, as per her desire and followed Lakshmana. On the way, she
experiences several bad omen but appealed to God that nothing unpleasant should
happen to the citizens. Lakshmana revealed to Seetha Devi that Srirama was abandoning
her only after crossing Ganga River. Seetha pretended to be highly disturbed
and distressed. Lakshmana returned. Valmeeki came to know that Seetha Devi was
living in a hermitage close to his Ashram. He went to the hermitage where
Seetha Devi was living, took her to his Ashram and pacified her with kind
words. In the hermitage of Sri Valmeeki, Seetha Devi gave to twin sons named
Kusha and Lava.
Although, in reality, Srirama and Seetha Devi were
inseparable, Srirama pretended to have abandoned Seetha Devi. The general
citizens believed that the demon clan of Suranakas was responsible for the
separation of Seetha Devi from Srirama. In accordance with the boon bestowed
upon the Suranakas by Lord Brahma, the positive energy they were till then ‘acquiring’
despite committing several sins through anti-social acts, they were deprived of
devotion and other virtuous qualities. They had to end up in the hell.
It must be kept in mind that Sri Narayana alone could
make the boons of Brahma unhappen. Lord Vayu could do it. But, he would not do
so because he would follow Sri Narayana. Lord Brahma bestows boons to the virtuous
as well as bad elements like demons. Lord Vishnu ensures that the boons
bestowed upon the virtuous become true and effective. However, Lord Vishnu ensures
that boons bestowed upon demons by Brahma can be ‘culpable’ and ‘unmaintainable’.
Thus, Srirama ensured that the boon of Brahma to
Suranakas was ‘true’ in spirit. Suranakas were driven into eternal hell due to
their folly of separating Srirama from Seetha Devi. Srirama pretended as though
he had actually abandoned Seetha Devi. In reality, Seetha Devi was very much
with Srirama. She was visible only to Srirama and invisible to the entire
universe. Srirama enacted as though he was performing various sacrifices by
keeping an idol of gold of Seetha Devi.
While performing Ashwamedha, he brought Seetha Devi
from the Ashram of Valmeeki and performed the sacrifice. But, once again, he
spoke in front of the general public that he was suspecting the fidelity of
Seetha Devi. Seetha Devi then declared “If Mother Earth agrees that I am pure
as wife of Srirama, let her take me inside”. Accordingly, Mother Earth
fragmented into two halves in front of Seetha Devi and took Seetha Devi by both
hands. After this incident, Srirama lived on earth for seven hundred more
years. Seetha Devi too was with him, visible only to Srirama and invisible to
all others. The entire act was only to drive Suranakas into the hell.
