SUMMARY: I salute you, oh Lord Neelakantha! You are
known to make crores of Rishis and that is why you are known as Koteeshwara.
When you can make all the Rishis happy, can you not make a Rishi happy?
Koteeshwaa is on the bus route between Udupi and
Kundapur. It is also spelt as Koteshwara. There is a very large temple
dedicated to Lord Eshwara. Every year, the temple authorities collect donations
from Kandavara, Gajapura (this is more popular as Kumbhasi) and Brahmavara,
three tiny hamlets which are very close to Koteeshwara, and conduct a huge Car
Festival.
Once upon a time, more than a crore Rishis were
performing penance for a very long period. Pleased with their devotion, Lord
Eshwara thought of making all the Rishis
happy, at once. Therefore, he appeared before them in the form of multitudes of
Lingas and bestowed blessings upon the Rishis. This is the reason why Lord
Eshwara here is popularly known as Sri Koteeshwara. Below the Linga in the
sanctum sanctorum of this temple, there is a well, which is covered with
thousands of Lingas. Lord Koteeshwara is believed to fulfill all the desires of
his devotees.
