SUMMARY: Oh Lord Sreesha! Consort of Sri Lakshmi, Lord of Anantapura! Are you sleeping (hiding) on Sri Adi Shesha due to fear of the movement of Lotus? Or, are your sleeping due to your affection and attachment to your son Brahma, who adores your naval? Are you sleeping on the most adorable serpent Adi Shesha, day and night, due to your love for his soft and youthful physique? Are your sleeping after consuming the delicious and tasty rice and other food items offered by your devotees? Or are you sleeping due to the service being rendered at your feet by Sri Lakshmi Devi?

SUMMARY: Vedas say: “AatmA vA arE draShTavyaha shrOtavyO mantavyO nidiDhyAsitavyaha” {आत्मा वा अरॆ द्रष्टव्यः श्रॊतव्यॊ मन्तव्यॊ निदिध्यासितव्यः), which means, listening, assimilating and meditation are essential to realize the Almighty. Most efficient Lord Anantapadmanabha at Anantapura is personally informing this supreme knowledge to scholarly and knowledgeable people.

Symbolically, there are three doors in the temple of Sri Ananthashayana. The face of the Lord is seen from the first, the naval and middle portion of the Lord from the second door and the feet alone from the third. Everyone can have a comprehensive and complete Darshan of the Lord by standing in front of the face of the Lord. The three portions of the Lord seen through the three doors empower the devotees with devotion, meditation and detachment.

SUMMARY: Lord Shesha, along with Sanaka and other Munis, listened to the discourse of Sri Purnaprajna (BrahmasutraBhAShya), standing in the sky. They showed up a part of their forms to the public on Earth for a very little while and disappeared instantly and went to their abodes.

Here is the evidence to the fact that even deities liked the discourses of Sri Madhwaru and were yearning to hear his discourses.

There is a detailed description of this fact in Chalari Achar’s Commentary.

“KadAchinmaDhwAchAryE BrahmasUtravyAKhyAnam kurvati sati shEShadEvaha sanakAdimuniBhihi saha aagatyAntarikSha yEva sThitvA MaDhwavyAKhyAnam ShrutwA gamanasamayE  BhUmiShyashrOtRujanaihi kinchit druShTaha san tatkShaNa yEvAdruShTaha san swasThAnam jagAma iti BhAvaha| AtrEdamaitihyam| ChandrABhAvasamayE tasmin vyAKhyAnasThalE vyAKhyAnArThamAgatasya shEShasya shuBhrAyAm kAntau vyAptAyAm kuta idAneem chandrikEtyAshcharyam kruvANAn BhUmiShThajanAn prati nEyam chandrikA kintu shEShakAntiriti vadat MaDhwaha gachChantam shESham pradarshayAmAsa iti|

Once, Sri Madhwaru was presenting a discourse during night that was berefr of moonlight. Then, there was a sudden light in the sky. People started wondering about the reason for such light to have suddenly covered the sky. Sri Madhwaru explained to the people that the light was not moonlight but Lord Shesha had come there to hear his discourse and the light was emanating from Lord Shesha. Sri Madhwaru is also said to have shown to the people Lord Shesha, who was about to return to his place. This has been mentioned in Bhavaprakashike:

SUMMARY: Sri Sanaka and other Munis, who were the embodiment of modesty, saluted the most radiant, thousand-hooded Lord SheSha, who was in their house then, saluted him and  questioned him in this way…

Lord SheSha has one thousand hoods and two thousand legs and what better compliment can be given to Madhwashastra after Lord SheSha alone praised it!

Sri Sanakadi Munis sought to know from Lord Shesha about the benefits of Madhwa Bhashya.

SUMMARY: I serve the Lord of Sri Anantashayanapura, who is getting served by Sri Lakshmi Devi and Sri Bhoo Devi at the feet; who is always adorned with ever bright, shining jewels; who is always in the sleeping posture; who has the shining lotus in the naval; who is being meditated continuously by the most proficient Lord Brahma; who is ornamented by the hoods of Serpent Adi SheSha that appear like the Royal Umbrella; who is the subject of devotion for Divakara, Kaundinya and other great sages and who grants all luxury, wealth and comforts in life.

Sri Anantashayana Kshetra is presently known as Tiru Anantapuram and it is more popular as Trivandrum. This region is known as Anantavana in the Puranas. This place is about 51 miles from Kanyakumari.

Inside the fort, on the right side, there is a vast lake. A large statue of Lord Sri Padmanabha resting on Adishesha adorns the sanctum sanctorum. It is said that the statue of Sheshashayana Anantapadmanabha at Trivandrum is the largest one in the world. The right hand of the Lord is lying on a Shiva Linga. Only the face is seen from the first door, the naval from the middle or the second door and the feet from the third door. Having Darshan of the feet of the Lord from the third door is considered to be equal to having the Darshan of the entire statue.

The greatness and sacredness of this temple finds mention in Brahmandapurana, Mahabharata and other Puranas or Epics. Earlier, a devotee of Lord Vishnu by name Divakara was doing penance here to have the Darshan of the Lord. After a few years, Sri Narayana came to him in the guise of a charming young boy and started living with Divakara. However, it never occurred to the mind Divakara that the boy was none other than the Almighty. One day, Lord Vishnu in the guise of a Brahmin Boy, told Divakara that if he wanted to have his (Lord’s) Darshan, he should go to Anantavana. It then occurred to the mind of Divakara that the boy was Lord Sri Vishnu. He went in search of the boy, calling his name as “Ananta”. He came across a dense forest, where he saw a temple dedicated to a goddess called Shasta and another temple of Sri Krishna. Both these temples are now in the premises of Sri Anantapadmanabha Temple. When Divakara came there, he saw a boy entering into a hole in a large tree. Divakara ran towards the tree but before he could reach there, the tree fell on the ground. For Divakara, the fallen tree appeared like Sheshashayana Sri Anantapadmanabha. That statue of Sri Anantapadmanabha was 12 miles long. The face of the Lord was three miles away and the feet nine miles away.

Later, Divakara Muni built a temple and got the statue of Lord Anantashayana Padmanabha carved out of the fallen tree in the same way as he had seen it and worshipped it. With the passage of time, in the year 1049, when the statue had to be slightly altered, 12,000 Saligramas were kept inside the statue and the present statue of Padmanabha was created with a mix called Katusharkara Yoga. Recently, when the statue was washed, it came to light that a major part of the statue is in gold. Sri Vadirajaru has offered prayers to this Lord in this stanza.

SUMMARY: That Cloud, with the lightning of knowledge that makes all the directions shine, with the rain waters of this type of statements, made the trees of the pious and spirituous that were suffering from the heat of worldly life, fill with flowers and fruits.

In this stanza, Sri Narayanapanditacharyaru has likened the knowledge that Sri Madhwaru spread among the pious and righteous people by providing correct, authentic and perfect interpretation of the Shastras to the rains that the Clouds produce to make the trees, likened to the pious and the spirituous, produce flowers and fruits.

The word “SaPhalasumanaha” can be interpreted as “SaPhalasuchittam” and “PhalapuSpasahitam”.
