SUMMARY: Later, Sri Madhwacharyaru visited a pilgrimage known as IshupAta and there remembered/meditated Sri Parashurama, the consort of Rama Devi; he ate thousands of the giant-sized plantains popularly known as “Rajakeli” that were offered to him.

Ishupata is a pilgrimage in the Parashurama Kshetra and this incident relates to what happened there, when Sri Madhwaru visited that place.

SUMMARY: Sri Madhacharyaru went to a place called Gove and there he ate four thousand giant plantains submitted to him by a Brahmin called ‘Shankara’; he drank water to the tune of thirty water containers; he also drank thirty containers of milk. He vanished from there when the King of that place and his servants tried to stop him.

These are two distinct instances that occurred in Goa.

“Panchakatrikayuga” means 5x3x2=30

It is explained in Bhava Prakashika: Panchakatrikam panchadashakam tadyugam trimshat|

“DashashateechatuShkam” means 4,000: DashAnAm shatAnAm samAhArO dashashatee shasram| tasyashchatuShkam chatuhsahasramityarThaha|

Another instance that occurred in Goa is as follows: The king of that State had planned to keep Sri Madhwaru under house arrest and thereby provide permanent protection to him. Then, he sent all his disciples to a far off place with his Yogic power and remained there alone. When the King opened the door of his room, he saw Sri Madhwaru sitting there in his normal Yogic posture. This has been described in Bhava Prakashika.

In this stanza, Sri Vadirajaru seems to disagree with the common perception that Kanyakumari is an incarnation of Goddess Parvati Devi.

SUMMARY: When Sri Madhwacharyaru was in “Hrisheekesha” Lord Sri Rudra in white complexion arrived to him in the guise of a Brahmin, saluted him, received alms, requested him to grace and bless, was seen by everyone clearly and instantly vanished from there; everyone around was astonished by this rare instance; he (Lord Rudra) appeared in the dream of a devotee, who was in a different place, motivated him to prepare several declicious food items and got them served among several people. Thus, he (Lord Rudra) made it very clear that the inner soul of Vedas and the Guru of everyone, Sri Madhwacharyaru, was his Guru too.

This was an incident that occurred when Sri Madhwacharyaru was in Hrisheekesha.

In Hrisheekesha, there is a very beautiful idol of Sri Hrisheekeshavamurthy. This is said to be a very rare idol cast strictly in accordance with the features of Hrisheekesha mentioned in Tantrasara. The shrine where this idol has been consecrated is known as Bharata Mandira.

It has been explained in Bhavaprakashike that Lord Sri Rudra appeared thrice in the dream of the priest of a nearby Shiva temple and told him that his Guru (Grandpa and father) Sri Madhwacharyary had come there, that he should offer a warm welcome to him and worship him and the priest had acted ccordingly.

This is a very distinct and rare instance that showed that Sri Madhwacharyaru highly valued and respected Sri Rudra.

“AnyasThalaga” means a Shivitie place different from Hrisheekesha. AnyasThalam – HrisheekeshakShEtrAdanyat kinchichChaivasThAnam (Vishwa).

“VedabanDhuhu” means a relative or relation, who has been described in the Vedas.

SUMMARY: The Almighty by name Kapila, along with Indra and other guardians of the directions, is residing in the light of the eyes. Sri Hari called Vishwa resides in the front portion of the right eye. He has white complexion and four shoulders. Wearing human and elephant faces, this Vishwarupi Hari provides the living beings the state of being awake with utmost compassion, consumes or conceives hard subjects and feeds them to the beings.

Mandooka Bhashya elaborates:

The word “NrugajAsya” means the Vishwarupa of Sri Hari having human and elephant faces. According to Holy Scriptures, in this form, Sri Hari has 16 faces and the special feature is that only one of those 16 faces is like that of an elephant.

SUMMARY: In the ears on either side of the face, the deities dedicated to directions are residing. Ganga and other deities dedicated to Holy Waters reside in the right ears. Trivikrama, the Originator of Ganga, purifies those who follow this line of thinking and reasoning.

Digdevatas or deities dedicated to directions refer to Indra and other deities, who are in-charge of the eight directions called AShTadikpAlakas. In the right ear, Ganga and all other deities dedicated to various Holy Waters, reside and in them Lord Trivikrama stays and purifies those who think of him and the deities residing in the right ear. This is the reason for Brahmins to keep the Yajnopaveeta (Thread) on the right ear while answering the nature’s call and so on and to keep its sanctity intact.

SUMMARY: Goddess Kanyakumari and the holy waters Kanyateertha bestow upon the devotees wealth and health. When she or they (Kanyakumari as well as Kanyateertha) deliver health and wealth, how can she/they still be treated as virgins?

This is only a praise offered to Kanyakumari in an indirect way in a lighter verin.

Sri Kanyakumari is about 60 miles from Tirunelveli. Kanyakumari is an island and a very popular pilgrimage. Having bath in Kanyakumari is considered to be very sacred and mandatory. Even touching the waters in Kanyakumari is very auspicious and drives away all sins.

Kanyakumari is the Southern tip of the subcontinent of India. It has Bay of Bengal on one side, Arabian Sea on another and Indian Ocean in the front side. Therefore, it is a confluence of three oceans and hence very holy. The Sunrise and Sunset provide an enchanting spectacle here.

There are several holy ponds called Savitri Teertha, Gayitri Teertha, Saraswati Teerth and so on. The Papavinashishi Teertha located in the northern side of the temple contains potable water.

One has to pass through sevral doors to have the Darshan of Goddess Kanyakumari, a very charming and attractive statue beholding a garland in one hand.

Mythologically, Goddess Parvathi incarnated as a Kanya, unmarried virgin girl, to kill Banasura, who was born in this place and had secured a blessing that he could only be killed by an unmarried girl. After killing Banasura, the goddess did penance and married Lord Shiva, with whom her marriage had once been cancelled because of a trick played by Narada Muni, who wanted the demon Bana to be killed. Bana had defeated Indra and other deities, besides creating havoc among other good people, Rishis, Munis and so on.

It is believed that the statue of Kanyakumari was consecrated by Lord Parashurama. Kanyakumari is one among the 52 Shakti Peethas. Kanyakumari is known by several names including Shakti, Bhadrakali and so on.

As directed by his master Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Swami Vivekananda sought blessings of Kanyakumari before embarking on his spiritual journey. Several Sanyasis had come here and performed years of penance.

Sri Vadirajaru has blessed us with three more stanzas dedicated to Sri Kanyakumari, which will be provided with meaning in the next episode.
