SUMMARY: “Oh fools! Do not fall into the water by being adventurous! How can there be any threat from us as we are in a small number and you are quite a number, compared to us? We are going to meet your King. Why do you want to create a brawl now?

Sri Madhwacharyaru saw many soldiers jumping into the Ganga to send away Sri Madhwaru and his pupils, when Sri Madhwaru spoke to them in their dialect and advised them not to venture into the rough waters of Ganga. After his advise, the soldiers abstained from venturing into the river and were saved.

SUMMARY: With this sort of an address, Sri Madhwacharyaru stopped the attacking soldiers from advancing like a sorcerer silences snakes and rescued his pupils from the deadly fear and took them to the other side of the river.

After hearing the voice of Sri Madhwaru, the advancing soldiers stood like statues like ghosts are stopped from an enchanter.

The crossing of the river was not only the crossing of a river in spate but also crossing the river of fear of death.

It may be remembered that when Vasudeva was carrying the just-born baby Krishna in a bamboo basket, Yamuna River, which was then in spate, ‘cleaved into chasms’ and paved the way for Vasudeva to walk across the river. Sri Madhwaru was carrying Lord Krishna in his heart and it was not surprising that Sri Krishna took Sri Madhwaru and his pupils to the other side of the river without any trouble.

SUMMARY: Although surrounded by the innumerable, cruel Turkish soldiers, Monitor of the Universe, Sri Madhwacharyaru, shone like a lion among a large number of foxes.

Sri Madhwaru was not deterred by the threatening soldiers and crossed the river, boldly, without any sort of fear or suspicion. After all, in his previous incarnation as Hanuman, he filled the heart of Ravana with fear. As Bheemasena during Dwapara Yuga, he was the most feared person from Dhrutarashtra, Duryodhana and others.

In this stanza, Sri Madhwaru has been symbolically likened to Lion and the Turkish soldiers to foxes, respectively.

SUMMARY: The knowledgeable people should think of the one thousand five hundred and twenty-six (1526) forms of Narayana existing in four types of bodies, right from the grass to Lord Brahma. He will bless those meditating the names such as Sun’s rays, Sun, Aditya every day with very good wealth of health.

Sri Vyasaru explains this aspect in Vishnurahasya:

ShabdAdyA viShayAha pancha tatrAviShTAstu dEvatAha|

BahuDhA jAyamAnO(s)ham tatrApi prAvisham kramAt|

शब्दाद्या विषयाः पन्च तत्राविष्टास्तु दॆवताः।

The names Ghruni (Sun’s rays), Sun (Surya) and Aditya are mentioned in the Sun Chant (Surya Mantra) and chanting this hymn ensures health, rain, good harvest and other riches, as stated in the concluding part of the chant while describing the benefits. However, Sri Hari exists in the Sun and bestows all the benefits that are believed to accrue to those who chant this hymn. Aitareya Bhashya explains:

“NArAyaNam SUryagatO gAyatryOpAsakO hi saha”|

“नारायणं सूर्यगतॊ गायत्र्यॊपासकॊ हि सः”।

Sri Krishna says in Gita: “YadAdityagatam tEjO tattEjO vidDhi mAmakam”

श्रिकृश्ण, गीता: “यदादित्यगतं तॆजॊ तत्तॆजॊ विद्धि मामकम्”

SUMMARY: Oh Lord of the Universe and Supreme God Varaha with white complexion, who tore the rock-hard body of Hiranyaksha with your tusks, took your subservient servant Earth, passionately embraced her and roaming about here with her.

Sri Bhuvaraha Swamy temple at Srimushnam in Tamil Nadu is dedicated to Sri Varaha Avatar or incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Constructed in the Dravidian style, Sri Bhuvaraha Swamy Temple at Srimushnam is a very popular pilgrimage.

Sri Varaha is the third incarnation of Lord Vishnu, which was undertaken to kill Hiranyaksha, brother of Hiranyakashipu, and to save Mother Earth.

Hiranyaksha was a devotee of Lord Brahma and secured a boon from Lord Brahma that no God, human, Demon, Deity, Animal or Beast could kill him. With this boon, Hiranyaksha thought he had become immortal and began torturing the people, harassing gods, goddesses, including Indra. With a view to inflict some permanent trouble to people and gods, Hiranyaksha caught the Mother Earth and took her to the nether world or Patala Loka through sea. Mother Earth began sinking.

Manu was the ruler at that time and along with his wife Shatarupa, he rushed to Lord Brahma and appealed to Lord Brahma to save the Earth. Brahma was helpless since he alone had bestowed the boon upon Hiranyaksha.

Lord Brahma meditated in the name of Lord Vishnu and sought his interference for saving Earth.  Lord Vishnu incarnated as Bhoo Varaha, the form of a Boar. Sri Varaha Swamy ploughed through the ocean. At that moment, Hiranyaksha confronted Varaha Swamy, after he was told by Narada that Lord Vishnu was already at the bottom of the ocean to save Earth. Hiranyaksha rushed towards Sri Varaha Swamy and in the battle that ensued between Sri Varaha and Hiranyaksha, Lord Varaha killed Hiranyaksha, carried the Earth on his protruded mouth and the two tusks and refixed her on her orbit.

Srimushnam is about 26 miles from Chidambaram through surface transport. It is said that Sri Madhwacharyaru had visited this place and had created a pond there. The pond is known as Danda Teertha. It is also believed that Sri Vishnu incarnated as Varaha at Srimushnam.

Before commencing the virtual Ashwamedha, the Horse/Stallion identified to be sacrificed, should be worshipped and decorated well. It should be left to roam about freely and the Stallion should wander at will. Anyone trying to control it should be stopped from doing so and if necessary wage war against him and make him surrender.

Srirama worshipped the horse and set it free to roam about. Shatrughna was assigned the duty of guarding the Stallion.

He summoned Seetha Devi, Kusha and Lava from the Ashram of Valmeeki and entered the Yajna Shala, along with the four sections of his defense force. Kings from all the countries arrived with tributes and presentations.

Sugreeva and other monkeys served food and water to Brahmins. Lord Brahma, son of Srirama, Rudra and other gods, goddesses and deities arrived to witness the Ashwamedha, especially because it was being performed by the sole recipient of the offerings made in the Sacrifice. Srirama was not only the performer of the sacrifice but also the beneficiary.

The rituals went on for a year. Srirama made everyone happy with rich gifts, presentations et all. Subsequently, Srirama performed Agnishtoma Atiratra, Vajapeya and many other sacrifices.

Once he saw Gargya, born in Angirasa Gotra, who had been sent by the King of Kekaya country. Came to know from him (Gargya) about the trouble being caused by over three crore demon children of a Gandharva  called Shailusha and got them killed by assigning the responsibility to Bharata, who had to go to Gandharvanagara to accomplish the task.

The details will be narrated in the next episode.

SUMMARY: Kind-hearted Sri Madhwacharyaru, leading all his pupils as the guardian-in-chief, kept his words by making his pupils cross the Ganga with ease, like as though they were crossing the ocean of family/worldly life.

Sri Madhwacharyaru asked his pupils to stand one-behind the other, each touching the one in front by hand and pupil immediately behind him was to hold the loin cloth he was wearing and walked across the river.

Symbolically, Sri Madhwaru, an incarnation of Lord Vayu, removes the common obstacles like lust, anger etc. that deter the journey towards salvation/Moksha.

SUMMARY: “Stop them from the enemy side! Stop them! Kill them before they reach this side of the river! Kill them! Kill them!”, the Turkish King was yelling at his soldiers and was rushing briskly towards Sri Madhwacharya and his pupils, when, Sri Madhwaru replied to the advancing soldiers in their native Turkish tongue.

As it is common in the legal parlour to respond to the defence witnesses in their native tongue, Sri Madhwaru spoke to the Turkish attackers in their mother tongue so that could first realize that those crossing river were not from the enemy side and secondly, they immediately abstained from any untoward or unpleasant action.

Word “Marayata, Marayata” employed in this stanza is synonymous of “MAro” in Turkish language.
