SUMMARY: Goddess Parvati, wearing a pleasant smile, is embracing her consort Lord Shiva, who is standing under the mango tree, probably thinking that he had been pleasantly touched by the arrow shot at him by God of Love.
Shivakanchi is quite a large city. It draws its name from the presence of Five wonderful Shiva temples. Sri Yekambaranatha Temple is said to be symbolic of Pancha Bhutas or Five Elements. Spread across 25 acres of land, the temple premises is very vast and sprawling. The temple complex comprises of several halls, including the one with one thousand pillars, said to have been built during Vijayanagara’s peak period.   However, according to historians, the masonry structure in the temple premises dates back to the Chola period in the 9th century.
Legend:
Goddess Parvati was once cursed to become dark-faced, reminiscent of Goddess Kali. She did penance under a mango tree located near Vegavati River. Lord Shiva wanted to test her conviction and dedication and hence created fire on and around her. Parvati sought the help of Vishnu for relieving her from the heat of fire. Lord Vishnu took the Moon from the head of Shiva and sent its rays to cool the heat of fire. Subsequently, Lord Shiva summoned Ganga River Goddess and directed her to disrupt the penance of Parvati. Parvati implored Ganga not to disturb her by stating that they were both sisters by virtue of being the consorts of Lord Shiva. Parvati created a Linga from sand and worshipped it. Finally, Lord Shiva appears in front of Parvati, who embraces him with devotion and love. This legend is what Sri Vadirajaru has described in this stanza.
Since the Lord here stands under Mango Tree, he came to be known as Yekambaranatha, where Yekambara means Mango Tree.
According to another legend, Parvati worshipped Lord Shiva in the form of Mother Earth and invoked the Lord in the Linga she created with sand. She did penance by embracing the Linga and Lord Shiva was impressed with her devotion and dedication and therefore appeared in person.
There is a very large pond known as Sarvateertha Sarovara. The temple is said to be one of the most ancient temples.

Sri Raghavendra Swamy Virachita SRI #RAMACHARITRYA #MANJARI (ಶ್ರೀ #ರಾಘವೆಂದ್ರಸ್ವಾಮಿ ವಿರಚಿತ “#ಶ್ರೀ ರಾಮಚಾರಿತ್ರ್ಯ ಮಂಜರಿ”)

SRI #RAMACHARITRYA #MANJARI
History of Dandakaranya
Sage Agastya had said earlier that in the forest where Shwetaraja did penance, there were no animals, birds or human beings in that forest. However, the trees, plants and creepers in that forest were yielding fruits, roots, flowers and many other things. Srirama questioned Sage Agastya about the reason for such condition of that forest. Srirama is omniscient and he knew everything. However, he sought to know the details from Sage Agastya for the sake of letting people know certain strange things.
Sage Agastya continued the narration:
“Ikshwaku of your dynasty was the son of the originator of your dynasty, Vaivaswata Manu. Vaivaswata installed his son on the throne and told Ikshwau ‘Enhance the dynasty.’
Ikshwak got one hundred sons. Of them, everyone was spirituous, righteous, knowledgeable and intelligent, except the last son. This last son was very foolish and had no interest in pursuing any field of knowledge. His father was very much worried about the last son. He thought that some day, the last son would commit some serious crime and embarrass him. It was for this state of mind of the last son that the king named the boy as Danda, which means wasteful or useless. The king gave the forest area lying between Vindhya and Shaivala mountains to Danda as his share of the kingdom. He created a city called Madhumanta and appointed Shukracharya as his royal priest. In fact, the subjects were leading a happy life in his kingdom.
Once, he went to the house of Shukracharya during Chaitra Masa or the spring season. The house of Shukracharya was surrounded by beautiful landscape where Araja, daughter of Shukracharya was roaming about, happily. Danda saw Araja, who was quite charming, and fell in love with her. He forcibly spoiled her chastity and returned to his town. Shukracharya, who was away then, returned home, came to know about what happened from his daughter, became furious and cursed the king:
“Because of the crime committed by him, this king will die in seven days. His children and soldiers will also die. The hundred Yojana long and broad kingdom of this king will be destroyed by the rain of stones to be created by Indra. He ordered the servants and other people living in his hermitage to get out of the kingdom of Danda, along with the livestock. However, he asked his daughter to stay in the same place and live happily as it would soon become a charming, uninhabited place, bereft of any animate beings. He said that a good period would definitely come for her and she should wait till such time. Shukracharya also moved away from the kingdom and the curse became true with the passage of time. It was covered with dense forest and came to be known as Dandakaranya. The place where people shifted to and lived outside the kingdom came to be known as Janasthana.”

SUMMARY: Each and every action and deed, and every pleasant word spelt by broad-minded Sri Madhwaru create surprise to the entire universe and shine everywhere! What a wonder?
Installation of Sri Krishna in Udupi, creation of Bhashya for Brahmasutra, delivery of discourses, performance of sacrifice and so on bore testimony for the fact that Sri Madhwaru was an incarnation of Lord Vayu. There was not a single act or a word spelt by him that did not surprise the people around in appreciation. Everything Sri Madhwaru did was exemplary and out of the world.

SUMMARY: Sri PoorNaprajnaru crossed several rivers that are the lifeline of animals, Vindhya and other mountains and reached BadarikAshram, the most beloved abode of Sri Vedavyasaru, with same ease, comfort and aplomb as he had earlier done at the time of getting initiated into sainthood.
Sri Madhwaru had to cross Krishna, Godavari, Ganga and many other rivers on his way to BadarikAshram.
The name of Saraswati River has double meanings, symbolically. While it verbally refers to Saraswati, Godavari, Ganga and other rivers he had to cross, it also signifies that through his discourses, explanations, interpretation of holy texts due to the grace of Goddess Saraswati, the cosort of Lord Brahma, Sri Madhwaru was showing the way to heavens to the people who followed him. The rivers crossed by Sri Madhwaru purify the corporal body and erase the sins of devotees and the golden words of Sri Madhwaru carry the souls of devotees of Lord Hari to the heavens.
In the compound word “samateetagOtrakaha”, the word “gOtrakaha” refers to Vindhya and other mountains on the one hand and the originators of Gotras like Vishwamitra, Kashyapa and others.
In his first visit to Badarikashrama, Sri Madhwacharyaru secured the permission of Sri Vedavyasaru to write commentary on Brahma Sutra. In his second visit to Badari, Sri Madhwaru submitted the Brahma Sutra Bhashya he had written to Sri Vedavyasa.
Due to paucity of space, shall provide the gist of stanza nos. 54 and 55.

SUMMARY: The clouds above, in the sky, could know the type of water in the river that is within the ocean; can the status of water be known by crows and sparrow? Similarly, this universe is thee, bound by the three qualities, in Lord Sri Hari. This fact can be understood or grasped by those who have knowledge of spiritual texts; others cannot know it
at all.
It is a known fact that the rivers retain their originality even after joining the sea. Lord Vayu, who is the creator of clouds, is aware of this phenomenon. Crows and sparrows cannot know this.
ATharvaNaBhAshya states:
“Swakeeyamudakam nadyaha samudrE naiva jAnatE|

Lord Vayu or the clouds are at infinite height but they grasp the factor that rivers do not integrate totally with Sea even after joining it. But, the crows and sparrows, which are direct witnesses to the sea and the joining of rivers into it, do not know this. Similarly, the knowledge is most important and not the position or location.

SUMMARY: Oh Lord of Kancheepura, Sri Varadaraja, I will not plead with you for
wealth or similar trivial affluence. But, I plead with you that give me thyself as you
are superior than the entire animate and inanimate universe.
Perhaps Sri Vadirajaru is expressing dissent to the common belief that Lord Varadaraja of Kanchipuram is more popular for meeting the demands of devotees for worldly pleasure, comfort and luxury. Sri Vadirajaru is asking the Lord to ‘give’ in’ himself into him, Sri Vadirajaru. By giving himself to Sri Vadirajaru, Lord Varadaraja could disprove the common contention.

SUMMARY:  This consort of Goddess Lakshmi, Sri Varadaraja, is expressing the fact that he fulfills the desires of devotees; he gets worshipped by Lord Brahma and other deities; that he is the recipient of all offerings done in sacrifices; that he is surrounded by the Brahmins and their Agraharas or their residential apartments and he, who emerged out of the sacrificial fire in the sacrifice performed by Lord Brahma.
At present, Kanchipuram is on the banks of Palar River in Tamil Nadu.
Historically, Kanchipuram is said to be most ancient city. Precisely, it is believed to have been built in 2nd Century. It was the capital of Cholas and Pallavas. Later, it was a very important city during the Vijaynagar period of 15th to 17th century. It was conquered by Muslim conquerors and subsequently it was under the British-ruled India before getting usurped by the French. Kanchipuram was perhaps one of the most important centres of learning and a distinct pilgrimage for Jains, Buddhists, Shaivites and Vaishnavites as the temples dedicated to all religious faiths are found in this city.
Sri Varadaraja temple is believed to have been built in about the end of 17th century. However, the greenstone sculptural extravaganza depicting Yoginis dates back to 9th and 10th century.

Sri Raghavendra Swamy Virachita
SRI #RAMACHARITRYA #MANJARI
There arises a question after going through the above story. Lord Brahma asked Shwetaraja, the king, to handover the necklace to Sage Agastya with a request that the necklace be handed over to Srirama. The question is, why Lord Brahma preferred this indirect connection? Could Lord Brahma not ask Shwetaraja to directly handover the necklace to Srirama?
The holy Scriptures have mandated that the donation of anything should be given after ascertaining whether the recipient deserves it or not. Donation to non-deserving persons causes inexplicable hardships. Lord Sri Hari is the primary and ultimate recipient of all donations. Anyone having ‘most presence’ of Sri Hari is the second recipient. The ‘presence’ of Lord Hari means, the Lord, although is omnipresent and is ‘present’ in every person, the variation in the presence of Lord Hari is directly proportionate to ‘purity’ of heart, other organs etc., which depends on the style of living and various other factors or phenomena. In this case, Lord Brahma and Lord Vayu have the ‘most presence’ presence of Lord Hari for obvious reasons. Rudra and deities equal to Rudra are the ‘third’ recipients of donations. The list of ‘recipients’ and their respective shares is quite long.
A devotee should not ‘desire’ for worldly pleasures like satisfaction of hunger or quenching of thirst. The devotee should not long for heavens or pleasures in heaven that are ‘common’ in the world hereafter. The devotee should ‘bare’ the pains involved in this world and the world hereafter. The ‘donation’ should be proportionate to the qualification of the recipient. Only then, the Lord Hari returns the ‘fruits’ of such donation in multiples quantity and quality. The ‘fruits’ of donation also depends on the commitment, dedication, conviction and other qualifying aspects of the donor. The ‘fruits’ cannot be ‘more than’ what the donor has ‘sought’. Otherwise, the recipient of fruits of donation or the donor will have to wait till he exhausts all the ‘fruits’ to move to the next world. Shwetamaharaja only wanted relief from ‘hunger’ and ‘thirst’. If he were to hand over the necklace directly to Srirama, the ‘quantum of fruits’ would be more than what he actually desired and he was not ‘qualified’ to receive such a bounty. Even if he were to have been blessed with a huge quantity of fruits, then it would have taken longer for him to attain salvation, which was unnecessary. Sage Agastya could absorb any amount of fruits but he had no such worldly desires. Therefore, Lord Brahma asked Shwetamaharaja to give the necklace to Srirama through Sage Agastya and his desire of getting permanent relief from hunger and thirst was fulfilled immediately after he handed over the necklace to Sage Agastya because it was virtually meant to be given to Srirama.
History of Dandakaranya will be explained in the next episode.
