384.     ವಾಸುದೇವನ ಗುಣಸಮುದ್ರದೊ-

            ಳೀಸಬಲ್ಲವ ಭವಸಮುದ್ರಾ-

            ಯಾಸವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ದಾಟುವನು ಶೀಘ್ರದಲಿ ಜಗದೊಳಗೆ|

            ಬೇಸರದೆ ದುರ್ವಿಷಯಗಳ ಅಭಿ-

            ಲಾಷದಲಿ ಬಳಲುವವ ನಾನಾ-

            ಕ್ಲೇಶಗಳನನುಭವಿಪ ಭಕ್ತಿ ಸುಮಾರ್ಗ ಕಾಣದಲೆ||5||

            VAsudEvana guNasamudrado-

                Leesaballava bhavasamudrA-

                yAsavillade dATuvanu sheeghradali jagadoLage|

                bEsarade durviShayagaLa abhi-

                lAShadali baLaluvava nAnA-

                klEshagaLananubhavipa bhakti sumArga kANadale||5||

SUMMARY: In this world, anyone capable of swimming in the ocean of qualities of Vasudeva Sri Hari will be able to easily swim across the ocean of family life quickly. If anyone fails to develop aversion for or distaste to bad subjects and continues to languish in the desire to go after them, will fail to find the path of devotion and suffers from a variety of troubles and problems.

For a man accomplished in swimming in large water reservoirs, it will be easy to swim small water bodies or dams. Similarly, one who can swim in the supreme qualities of Lord Sri Hari, will not find it difficult to swim across the ocean of life.     

385.     ಸ್ನಾನ ಜಪ ದೇವಾರ್ಚನೆಯು ವ್ಯಾ-

            ಖ್ಯಾನ ಭಾರತಮುಖ ಮಹೋಪಪು-

            ರಾಣಕಥೆಗಳ ಪೇಳಿ ಕೇಳಿದರೇನು ದಿನದಿನದಿ|

            ಜ್ಞಾನ ಕರ್ಮೇಂದ್ರಿಯಗಳಿಂದೇ-

            ನೇನು ಮಾಡುವ ಕರ್ಮಗಳು ಲ-

            ಕ್ಷ್ಮೀನಿವಾಸನ ಪೂಜೆ ಎಂದರ್ಪಿಸದ ಮಾನವನು||6||

`               SnAna japa dEvArchaneyu vyA-

                KhyAna bhAratamukha mahOpapu-

                rANakathegaLa pELi kELidarEnu dinadinadi|

                jnAna karmEndriyagaLindE-

                nEnu mADuva karmagaLu la-

                kShmeenivAsana pUje yendarpisada mAnavanu||6||

SUMMARY: What is the benefit that a man having bath, doing meditation, worshipping the Lord, delivering discourses on Shastras, reading great epics and great books of philosophy every day if he does not submit all the actions done with the sensory organs that earn him supreme knowledge, with the organs involved in the action and others as worship of Lord Sri Hari, the consort of Sri Lakshmi?  

It is essential for every human being to think and submit all his or her actions, reasonings, views, thoughts of every moment, every day as worship of Lord Hari. Without this sense of submission and sense of devotion, whatever one may do as part of righteousness, tradition, culture, etc., become futile and pretentious.

It is a cardinal principle that at the end of all Homas like Navagraha Homa (sacrifice), worship of any deity, ceremonies and so on, the phrase “Sri Krishnarpanamastu” is spelt. This is a clear message that everything should be surrendered to Sri Hari.

ಇತಿ ತಾತವಚೋ ನಿಶಮ್ಯ ಕಿಂಚಿತ್ ತರಲಾತ್ಮಾsಪಿ ವಿಚಾರ್ಯ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಸಾರಂ|

ಪರಮೇವ ಸ ಪಾರಮಾರುರುಕ್ಷುರ್ವಿಗುಣೋಪಾಸ್ತಿಮುಪಾಶೃಣೋತ್ ಪರೇಭ್ಯಃ||53||

इति तातवचॊ निशम्य किन्चित् तरलात्माsपि विचार्य शास्त्रसारम्।

परमॆव स पारमारुरुक्षुर्विगुणॊपास्तिमुपाशृणॊत् परॆभ्यः॥53॥

Iti tAtavachO nishamya kinchit taralAtmA(s)pi vichArya shAstrasAram|

ParamEva sa pAramArurukShurviguNOpAstimupAshruNOt parEbhyaha||53||

SUMMARY:


Although Trivikramapanditacharyaru was a bit perturbed or confused after hearing what his father said, he thoroughly and deeply thought about the secret behind the Shastras, developed a desire to cross the Ocean of Worldly life in that way and listened to the Nirgunopasana or the mystic philosophy that describes the Almighty as “without any quality or character” that other people were professing.

Sri Trivikramapandicharyaru understood and appreciated what his father told him. However, to acquaint himself with the tools of analytical understanding of the ultimate philosophy, he lent his ear to what the philosophers and scholars of Nirgunopasana or mysticism were professing. ParEbhyaha in this stanza means Mayavadis.    

ನಿಜಧರ್ಮರತೋ ಗೃಹಿಪ್ರಬರ್ಹಃ ಕಲಿಕಾಲಾಕುಲಿತಾಂತರೋsಪಿ ಹಂತ|

ನಿತರಾಂ ನಿಶಿತಾತ್ಮನಾ ನಿಸರ್ಗಾತ್ ಸ್ಫುಟಮಾಲೋಚಯದಿತ್ಯಸೌ ಕದಾಚಿತ್||54||

निजधर्मरतॊ गृहिप्रबर्हः कलिकालाकुलितान्तरॊsपि विचार्य शास्त्रसारम्।

नितरां निशितात्मना निसर्गात् स्फुटमालॊचयदित्यसौ कदाचित्॥54॥

NijadharmaratO gruhiprabarhaha kalikAlAkulitAntarO(s)pi hanta|

NitarAm nishitAtmanA nisargAt sphuTamAlOchayadityasau kadAchit||54||

SUMMARY:  Sri Trivikramapandita, who was family-bound person with his roots still in the ancient and established culture, was slightly disturbed mentally due to the impact of the Kali Yuga; still, being a very sharp intellectual, he once thought very deeply in this way.

ರಚಿತಂ ನನು ಸೂತ್ರಮತ್ರ ಮಾನಂ ವಿದುಷಾ ಸತ್ಯವತೀಸುತೇನ ಸಾಕ್ಷಾತ್|

ಅಪರಸ್ಪರಸಂಗತಾನಿ ಭಾಷ್ಯಾಣ್ಯಪಿ ಸರ್ವಾಣಿ ನ ಮಾನತಾಂ ವ್ರಜೇಯುಃ||55||

रचितं ननु सूत्रमत्र मानं विदुषा सत्यवतीसुतॆन साक्षात्।

अपरस्परसन्गतानि भाष्याण्यपि सर्वाणि न मानतां व्रजॆयुः॥55॥

Rachitam nanu sUtramatra mAnam viduShA satyavateesutEna sAkShAt|

AparasparasangatAni bhAShyANyapi sarvANi na mAnatAm vrajEyuhu||55||

SUMMARY: When it comes to the question of giving a verdict in the matter of philosophy and culture, the Brahmasutra created or composed by Sri Vedavyasa himself is the most important proof and evidence. However, the commentaries that have sprouted upon the Brahmasutra are ambiguous and contradictory to one another and therefore none of them can be conceived as proof or the ultimate truth.

Here, Sri Trivikramapandita is telling that the commentaries and interpretations of Brahmasutra by various scholars, philosophers and persons belonging to different cult and schools of thought were either derogatory of each other or were untenable. The commentaries that existed till then, the period when Sri Trivikramapandita began exploring the true philosophy, the underlying truth and secret of Brahmasutra was not clear. They were paradoxical, ambiguous, confusing and far from convincing.

The commentaries on Brahmasutra mentioned here refers to the 21 commentaries that were in vogue till then and all those twenty-one commentaries were lopsided, incomplete, self-defeating and contradictory to each other. Therefore, Sri Trivikrama felt there should be some other commentary or interpretation which would provide the exact truth, the intrinsic value to the Brahmasutra that Sri Vedavyasa had created. Sri Vedavyasa is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and Brahmasutra written by Him is the ultimate Truth. However, it was not easily intelligible.   

ಯದಿ ತೇಷು ನಿರಾಗ್ರಹಾಂತರಾಃ ಸ್ಮಃ ಸುಘಟಂ ನೋಪಲಭಾಮಹೇ ಹಿ ಕಿಂಚಿತ್|

ನ ತಥಾsಪಿ ಪರಂಪರೋಪಯಾತಂ ನ ಪಠಾಮಃ ಪ್ರಣಯೇನ ಶಾಂಕರೀಯಂ||56||

यदि तॆषु निराग्रहान्तराः स्मः सुघटं नॊपलभामहॆ हि किन्चित्।

न तथाsपि परम्परॊपयातं न पठामः प्रणयॆन शांकरीयम्॥56॥

Yadi tEShu nirAgrahAntarAha smaha sughaTam nOpalAbhAmahE hi kinchit|

Na tathA(s)pi paramparOpayAtam na paThAmaha praNayEna shAnkareeyam||56||

SUMMARY: If reviewed without any bias or reservation, the meanings of Sutra provided in any of those commentaries was not at all correlative, cohesive nor comprehensive. Yet, due to the attachment that has developed on them since they had come down to us from several generations, we are unable to avoid going through the Bhashya or commentary provided by Shankaracharyaru.  

What Sri Trivikramapandita concludes is that the commentary on Brahmasutra by Shankaracharyaru has been in vogue and is still being treated with reverence and hence the Shankarabhashya is worth going through.

This reasoning of Sri Trivikramapanditaru was prior to his contact with Sri Madhwacharyaru.

CANTO 13 – NAMASMARANA SANDHI

380.        ಮಕ್ಕಳಾಡಿಸುವಾಗ ಮಡದಿಯೊ-

            ಳಕ್ಕರದಿ ನಲಿವಾಗ ಹಯಪ-

            ಲ್ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿ ಗಜ ಮೊದಲಾದ ವಾಹನಗಳೇರಿ ಮೆರೆವಾಗ|

            ಬಿಕ್ಕುವಾಗಾಕಳಿಸುತಲಿ ದೇ-

            ವಕ್ಕಿ ತನಯನ ಸ್ಮರಿಸುತಿಹ ನರ

            ಸಿಕ್ಕ ಯಮದೂತರಿಗೆ ಆವಾವಲ್ಲಿ ನೋಡಿದರು||1||

            MakkaLADisuvAga maDadiyo-

            Lakkaradi nalivAga hayapa-

            LlakShmi gaja modalAda vAhanagaLEri merevAga|

            BikkuvAgAkaLisutali dE-

            Vakki tanayana smarisutiha nara

            Sika yamadUtarige AvAvalli nODidaru||1||

SUMMARY: A person remembering the son of Devaki, Lord Krishna, while playing with kids, romancing with wife, roaming about gleefully riding a horse, sitting in a palanquin, sitting on an elephant or any other vehicle, while hiccoughing, yawning and so on will never be caught by the messengers of God of Death Yamaraja.

This information is available in Bhagavata, Garudapurana and various other holy texts.

In Pancharatra, names of Lord Kirshna to be remembered during different actions have been given. For example, name of Narayana should be remembered at dawn, Keshava during defecation; Hari during brushing of tooth and so on. It is essential to know that all human actions are the grace of Lord, love of Lord and it is only due to his kindness on each being that human beings do everything.

381.     ಸರಿತು ಪ್ರವಹಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ದಿವ್ಯಾಂ-

            ಬರದಿ ಪತ್ರಾದಿಯಲಿ ಹರ್ಷಾ-

            ಮರ್ಷ ವಿಸ್ಮೃತಿಯಿಂದಲಾಗಲಿ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಬಾಯ್ದೆರೆದು|

            ಹರಿ ಹರೀ ಹರಿಯೆಂಬ ಎರಡ-

            ಕ್ಷರ ನುಡಿದಮಾತ್ರದಲಿ ದುರಿತಗ-

            ಳಿರದೆ ಪೋಪವು ತೂಲರಾಶಿಯೊಳನಲ ಪೊಕ್ಕಂತೆ||2||

            Saritu pravahagaLalli divyAm-

            Baradi patrAdiyali harShA-

            marSha vismrutiyindalAgali vomme bAyderedu|

            Hari haree hariyemba yeraDa-

            kShara nuDidamAtradali duritaga-

            Lirade pOpavu tUlarShiyoLanala pokkante||2||

SUMMARY: While taking dip in rivers or caught in floods, while wearing divine clothes, in letters, joyous moments, fury, forgetfulness and such other conditions in which a person is caught, if he or she once opens the mouth wide open and spells out the two letters “Ha-ri, Ha-ri, Ha-ri” at least once, then, like a heap of cotton burns into ashes with a sparkle of fire, all the troubles and turmoil will certainly vanish.

382.     ಮಲಗುವಾಗಲಿ ಏಳುವಾಗಲಿ

            ಕುಳಿತು ಮಾತಾಡುತಲಿ ಮನೆಯೊಳು

            ಕೆಲಸಗಳ ಮಾಡುತಲಿ ಮೈದೊಳೆವಾಗ ಮೆಲುವಾಗ|

            ಕಲುಷದೂರನ ಸಕಲಠಾವಿಲಿ

            ತಿಳಿಯೆ ತತ್ತನ್ನಾಮರೂಪವ

            ಬಳಿಯಲಿಪ್ಪನು ಒಂದರಕ್ಷಣ ಬಿಟ್ಟಗಲನವರ||3||

            MalaguvAgali yELuvAgali

            KuLitu mAtADutali maneyoLu

            kelasagaLa mADutali maidoLevAga meluvAga|

            kaluShadUrana sakalaThAvili

            tiLiye tattannAmarUpava

            baLiyalippanu vondarakShaNa biTTagalanavara||3||

SUMMARY: In all conditions, including while sleeping, waking up, conversing, doing work at home, having a bath, eating, and so on, if one remembers the respective names of Lord Hari at all places, then he will always be with him or her; he will never depart away from those who remember him in this way.

383.     ಆವಕುಲದವನಾದಡೇನಿ-

            ನ್ನಾವದೇಶದೊಳಿರ್ದಡೇಣಿ-

            ನ್ನಾವ ಕರ್ಮವ ಮಾಡಲೇನ್ನಿನ್ನಾವ ಕಾಲದಲಿ|

            ಶ್ರೀವರನ ಸರ್ವತ್ರದಲಿ ಸಂ-

            ಭಾವಿಸುತ ಪೂಜಿಸುತ ಮೋದಿಪ

            ಕೋವಿದರಿಗುಂಟೇನೊ ಭಯದುಃಖಾದಿ ದೋಷಗಳು||4||

SUMMARY: Irrespective of which community or dynasty a person is born, whichever country he or she is in, whatever duty he or she is discharging and whatever may be the time, if a person remembers Lord Hari continuously, everywhere, worships and enjoys doing so, such knowledgeable persons will have no fear, sor
row or such problems. Can there be any doubt about it?

ಸ ಸಸರ್ಜ ಸದಧ್ವಗೋಪಕೃತ್ಯೈ ಲಿಕುಚಃ ಕಾವ್ಯಫಲಂ ರಸಾಭಿರಾಮಂ||48||

सकलान्गयुतावभातशाखः समयॆ प्राप्त उदारपक्षिसॆव्यः।

स ससर्ज सदध्वगॊपकृत्यै लिकुचः काव्यफलं रसाभिरामम्॥48॥

SakalAngayutAvabhAtashAkhaha samayE prApta udArapakShisEvyaha|

Sa sasarja sadadhwagOpakrutyai likuchaha kAvyaphalam rasAbhirAmam||48||

SUMMARY: Sri Trivikramapanditaru of the Likucha dynasty, which had earned the respect and reverence of the then distinct scholars of all Mutts, who were well versed in all the Vedas and sub-Vedas, created a very charming fruit in the form of great poetry for the sake of virtuous travelers in the journey of acquiring divine knowledge.

A tree called Likucha that was being graced rare species of birds was producing delicious fruits at proper time so that the travelers passing under it could taste them, quench their hunger, relax for a few moments and continue their journey. The Fruit that is being referred to have been produced by Sri Trivikramapanditacharyaru is said to be UshAharaNa, an epic poem consisting of Nine Sargas or Cantos with seven hundred and forty-four Shlokas or stanzas.

Adhwaga means Pathika or traveler.  

ಪ್ರತಿಪಾದಿತಮಾತ್ಮನಾ ಯಥಾರ್ಥಂ ಪೃಥುಮಾಯಾಸಮಯಸ್ಯ ದುರ್ಘಟತ್ವಂ|

ಸ್ವಗುರೌ ಪರಿಹರ್ತುಮಕ್ಷಮೇsಪಿ ಶ್ರುತವಾಂಸ್ತಂ ಸ ವಯಸ್ಯಬೋಧಿತೋsಲಂ||49||

प्रतिपादितमात्मना यथार्थं पृथुमायासमयस्य दुर्घटत्वम्।

स्वगुरौ परिहर्तुमक्षमॆsपि श्रुतवांस्तं स वयस्यबॊधितॊsलम्॥49॥  

PratipAditamAtmanA yathArtham pruthumAyAsamayasya durghaTatwam|

Swagurau parihartumakShamE(s)pi shrutavAmstam sa vayasyabOdhitO(s)lam||49||

SUMMARY: When he rightly proved that the Mayavada or the Adwait philosophy was untenable (Durghata) since it was full of paradoxes and ambiguities, his master could not resolve the issue; yet, due to the force of his friends and fellow-students, he silently lent his ears.

This stanza indicates that Sri Trivikramapanditacharyaru was not convinced with the reasoning or logical establishment of the Mayavada even as a student of philosophy, at a very young age as he possessed divine analytical mind.

ಭಗವತ್ಯುದಿತೇ ಸಗೋವಿಲಾಸೇ ವಟುಭಾವ್ಯಂ ತ್ಯಜತಿ ತ್ರಿವಿಕ್ರಮಾಖ್ಯೇ|

ಅಪಿ ಭಾನುಪುರಃಸರಾಃ ಸಮಸ್ತಾಃ ಪ್ರಯಯುಃ ಕೀಟಮಣಿಪ್ರಭತ್ವಮಾಶು||50||

भगवत्युदितॆ सगॊविलासॆ वटुभाव्यं त्यजति त्रिविक्रमाख्यॆ।

अपि भानुपुरःसराः समस्ताः प्रययुः कीटमणिप्रभत्वमाशु॥50॥

BhagavatyuditE sagOvilAsE vaTubhAvyam tyajati trivikramAkhyE|

Api bhAnuprahsarAha samastAha prayayuhu keeTamaNiprabhatwamAshu||50||

SUMMARY: When Narayana named Trivikrama, a nonchalant, eloquent person of great skills and knowledge emerged as a young person and dawned with the skills of deep knowledge of Vedas and Shastras, all the debaters such as Bhanu suddenly appeared like fire-insects.

As soon as Lord Vishnu appeared in the form of Vamana and then transcended into the form of Trivikrama, stars like Sun and others lost their shin and started appearing like fire insects in front of Lord Trivikrama. Similarly, the then established scholars like Bhanu and others lost their shin in front of Trivikramapanditacharyaru.

Bhanupandita is said to have been an expert in a cult called Prabhakara. Although his name was Bhanu or Dinamani meaning Moon, in front of Sri Trivikramapanditacharyaru, he and so many others lost their shin.

 

ಅತಿದಕ್ಷಮತಿಂ ಸಪಾದಲಕ್ಷೇ ಸಮಯೇ ಮಾಯಿಜನಸ್ಯ ಯುಕ್ತಿಶೂರಂ|

ಮಹಿತಂ ಹಿ ಮಹೀತಲೇ ಮಹಿಮ್ನಾ ಜನಕೋ ನಂದನಮಬ್ರವೀದುಪಾಂಶು||51||

अतिदक्षमतिं सपादलक्षॆ समयॆ मायिजनस्य युक्तिशूरम् ।

महितं हि महीतलॆ महिम्ना जनकॊ नन्दनमब्रवीदुपाम्शु॥51||

AtidakShamatim sapAdalakShE samayE mAyijanasya yuktishUram|

Mahitam hi maheetalE mahimnA janakO nandanamabraveedupAmshu||51||

SUMMARY: With his son Trivikrama getting accolades from all scholars due to the eloquence and expertise he had acquired over Mayavada that is contained in one lakh and twenty-five thousand great works, his father Subrahmanya once told him in tranquillity.

ಶೃಣು ವಾಚಮಿಮಾಂ ವಿಚಾರಿತಾರ್ಥಾಂ ನ ಕಲೌ ನಿರ್ಗುಣಭಾವನಾ ಸುಖಾಯ|

ಇತಿ ಗೌಣವಿಮುಕ್ತಯೇ ಗುಣಾಢ್ಯಂ ಭಜ ದೇವಂ ಸುತ ವಾಸುದೇವಮೇವ||52||

शृणु वाचमिमां विचारितार्थां न कलौ निर्गुणभावना सुखाय।

इति गौणविमुक्तयॆ गुणाढ्यं भज दॆवं सुत वासुदॆवमॆव॥52॥

ShruNu vAchamimAm vichAritArthAm na kalua nirguNabhAvanA sukhAya|

Iti gauNavimuktayE guNADhyam bhaja dEvam suta vAsudEvamEva||52||

SUMMARY: “Dear Child! Please listen to my words as I have studied everything, well perceived and analysed them! During Kali Yuga, worship of Lord, who is the embodiment of all knowledge and qualities or characters, through mysticism does not give you happiness. Therefore, meditate Sri Vasudeva, who is the epitome of all supreme qualities.”

There is a cult that describes Almighty as having no characters at all while trying to prove that Almighty has immeasurable, innumerable and infinite qualities. However, all philosophies of all ages have established that Almighty is beyond the describable qualities or characters.

379.   ಶ್ರೀಧವ ಜಗನ್ನಾಥವಿಟ್ಠಲ

          ತಾ ದಯದಿ ವದನದೊಳು ನುಡಿದೋ-

          ಪಾದಿಯಲಿ ನಾ ನುಡಿದೆನಲ್ಲದೆ ಕೇಳಿ ಬುಧಜನರು|

          ಸಾಧುಲಿಂಗಪ್ರದರುಶಕರು ನಿ-

          ಷೇಧಿಸಿದರೇನಹದು ಎನ್ನಪ-

          ರಾಧವೇನಿದರೊಳಗೆ ಪೇಳ್ವದು ತಿಳಿದು ಕೋವಿದರು||45||
