SUMMARY: Oh Lord of the Universe and Supreme God Varaha with white complexion, who tore the rock-hard body of Hiranyaksha with your tusks, took your subservient servant Earth, passionately embraced her and roaming about here with her.

Sri Bhuvaraha Swamy temple at Srimushnam in Tamil Nadu is dedicated to Sri Varaha Avatar or incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Constructed in the Dravidian style, Sri Bhuvaraha Swamy Temple at Srimushnam is a very popular pilgrimage.

Sri Varaha is the third incarnation of Lord Vishnu, which was undertaken to kill Hiranyaksha, brother of Hiranyakashipu, and to save Mother Earth.

Hiranyaksha was a devotee of Lord Brahma and secured a boon from Lord Brahma that no God, human, Demon, Deity, Animal or Beast could kill him. With this boon, Hiranyaksha thought he had become immortal and began torturing the people, harassing gods, goddesses, including Indra. With a view to inflict some permanent trouble to people and gods, Hiranyaksha caught the Mother Earth and took her to the nether world or Patala Loka through sea. Mother Earth began sinking.

Manu was the ruler at that time and along with his wife Shatarupa, he rushed to Lord Brahma and appealed to Lord Brahma to save the Earth. Brahma was helpless since he alone had bestowed the boon upon Hiranyaksha.

Lord Brahma meditated in the name of Lord Vishnu and sought his interference for saving Earth.  Lord Vishnu incarnated as Bhoo Varaha, the form of a Boar. Sri Varaha Swamy ploughed through the ocean. At that moment, Hiranyaksha confronted Varaha Swamy, after he was told by Narada that Lord Vishnu was already at the bottom of the ocean to save Earth. Hiranyaksha rushed towards Sri Varaha Swamy and in the battle that ensued between Sri Varaha and Hiranyaksha, Lord Varaha killed Hiranyaksha, carried the Earth on his protruded mouth and the two tusks and refixed her on her orbit.

Srimushnam is about 26 miles from Chidambaram through surface transport. It is said that Sri Madhwacharyaru had visited this place and had created a pond there. The pond is known as Danda Teertha. It is also believed that Sri Vishnu incarnated as Varaha at Srimushnam.

Before commencing the virtual Ashwamedha, the Horse/Stallion identified to be sacrificed, should be worshipped and decorated well. It should be left to roam about freely and the Stallion should wander at will. Anyone trying to control it should be stopped from doing so and if necessary wage war against him and make him surrender.

Srirama worshipped the horse and set it free to roam about. Shatrughna was assigned the duty of guarding the Stallion.

He summoned Seetha Devi, Kusha and Lava from the Ashram of Valmeeki and entered the Yajna Shala, along with the four sections of his defense force. Kings from all the countries arrived with tributes and presentations.

Sugreeva and other monkeys served food and water to Brahmins. Lord Brahma, son of Srirama, Rudra and other gods, goddesses and deities arrived to witness the Ashwamedha, especially because it was being performed by the sole recipient of the offerings made in the Sacrifice. Srirama was not only the performer of the sacrifice but also the beneficiary.

The rituals went on for a year. Srirama made everyone happy with rich gifts, presentations et all. Subsequently, Srirama performed Agnishtoma Atiratra, Vajapeya and many other sacrifices.

Once he saw Gargya, born in Angirasa Gotra, who had been sent by the King of Kekaya country. Came to know from him (Gargya) about the trouble being caused by over three crore demon children of a Gandharva  called Shailusha and got them killed by assigning the responsibility to Bharata, who had to go to Gandharvanagara to accomplish the task.

The details will be narrated in the next episode.

SUMMARY: Kind-hearted Sri Madhwacharyaru, leading all his pupils as the guardian-in-chief, kept his words by making his pupils cross the Ganga with ease, like as though they were crossing the ocean of family/worldly life.

Sri Madhwacharyaru asked his pupils to stand one-behind the other, each touching the one in front by hand and pupil immediately behind him was to hold the loin cloth he was wearing and walked across the river.

Symbolically, Sri Madhwaru, an incarnation of Lord Vayu, removes the common obstacles like lust, anger etc. that deter the journey towards salvation/Moksha.

SUMMARY: “Stop them from the enemy side! Stop them! Kill them before they reach this side of the river! Kill them! Kill them!”, the Turkish King was yelling at his soldiers and was rushing briskly towards Sri Madhwacharya and his pupils, when, Sri Madhwaru replied to the advancing soldiers in their native Turkish tongue.

As it is common in the legal parlour to respond to the defence witnesses in their native tongue, Sri Madhwaru spoke to the Turkish attackers in their mother tongue so that could first realize that those crossing river were not from the enemy side and secondly, they immediately abstained from any untoward or unpleasant action.

Word “Marayata, Marayata” employed in this stanza is synonymous of “MAro” in Turkish language.

SUMMARY: May three-eyed Lord Eshwara residing in Vruddhachala, where he is known as Sadyojata, instantly enhance the depth of my spiritual knowledge.

By employing the term Trinetra, a name derived due to the fact that Lord Eshwara has three eyes, Sri Vadirajaru has appealed to Lord Eshwara to open his third to effectively enhance his spiritual knowledge; by employing the word “Achalavasi”, which is referred to the unshakable hillock on which Lord Eshwara resides in this place, Sri Vadirajaru has appealed to the Lord that whatever knowledge the Lord is imparting to him should be unshakable, rock-solid and eternal; with another word “Vruddhachala” also, Sri Vadirajaru requests Lord Eshwara that the spiritual knowledge imbibed by him with the grace of Lord Rudra should remain permanently, without any room for confusion or variation or deviation.

SUMMARY: I salute with folded hands, Oh Lord Shiva, who destroys the desires of bad (unrighteous) or diabolic people; who removes the troubles of devotees; who killed demon Tripurasura (Puravairi) and is an epitome of welfare and wellbeing.

It is believed that a Rishi named Vibheeshata did penance here in the name of Lord Rudra, who appeared there and blessed the Rishi.

The temple is very close to the Tiruchinappalli Railway Station. In fact, Villupuram is known for several Shiva Temples. There are mammoth temples dedicated to Srirama, Narasihma and other gods too.

Historically, many temples were probably renovated by Raja Raja Chola of the Chola dynasty.

There is no clarity on the image of the temple of Sri Vruddhachaleshwara. If someone can provide it, I will be highly obliged.

MEANING: Once, Srirama invited Sugreeva and other monkeys and performed the Ashwamedha sacrifice for a year with his entire riches.

Srirama asked the Doorkeeper to bring Lakshmana and Bharata, who instantly arrived and saluted him by folding the two hands and stood in front of him, obediently. Srirama embraced both passionately and affectionately.

“In all the sacrifices, I get worshipped by being present in different deities. Therefore, I am known as ‘Yajneshwara’. Lord Brahma and other Gods, Narada and other Munis make me happy by performing sacrifices. Similarly, the spirituous and virtuous people should perform sacrifices to please me and make me happy. Therefore, they should learn from proper sources the traditional manner in which the sacrifices should be performed. However, I wish to make all the people, including the Gods and Goddesses, know the manner in which these sacrifices should be performed. With my blessing, Brahma and other gods have learnt a little bit in this matter. I am the only one knowing the perfect manner in this regard.”

Lakshmana enquired: “Oh Lord, to the best of my knowledge, Ashwamedha is the most important sacrifice. Devendra, after killing Vrutrasura, attracted the sin of Brahma Hatya and got relieved from that negative energy by performing Ashwamedha. Shraddhadeva, the son of Sun and originator of our dynasty, who was more popular as Vaivaswatamanu, did not have children for several years. Sage Vasishtha advised him and got Ashwamedha performed by him. His wife was desirous of having a daughter. She impressed upon one of the priests called Hota and requested him to demand for a daughter while submitting the sacrificial animal. He followed her instructions and as a result, they got a daughter named ‘Ila’.

“The King came to know about this change, consulted Sage Vasishtha and sought to know from the sage the reason for getting a daughter. Vasishtha read through his mystic powers and informed the king about the turn of events that had contributed to their getting a daughter. Later, the sage appealed to Lord Hari and got ‘Ila’ transform into a male, who came to be known as Sudyumna, later.

Once, Sudyumna went on a hunting spree. As soon as reaching an island called Ilavruta, Sudyumna, his horse, the soldiers and everyone accompanying Sudyumna transformed into female. In that region, Lord Rudra, along with his friends and relatives, was always engaged in worshipping Lord Hari in the form of Sankarshana. Once, when Lord Rudra and Parvati were romancing, some Rishis wanted to meet them. After coming to know about the situation, they returned. However, Parvati became shy and to please her, Lord Rudra declared that no male should ever enter that region. Even if a man accidentally enters there, he would transform into female.

“After this news spread, no male beings ever entered this region. Since Sudyumna and his accomplices were unaware of this fact, they arrived there and became women.

“Sudyumna again became Ila. Lord Budha, son of Moon, saw her and married her. From her, the originator of Moon Dynasty, Pururava was born. After the birth of Pururava, Ila felt very bad and offered prayers to Sage Vasishtha and narrated her cup of woes. The sage realized that Lord Rudra was the reason for the transformation of Sudyumna into Ila and therefore appealed to Rudra for help. But, Lord Rudra did not want to amend the boon he had bestowed upon his consort Parvati Devi. He could neither ignore the appeal of Sage Vasishtha. Therefore, he altered his boon to Parvati Devi by stating that those men entering the region would be women for one month and women in the next month and this process will continue forever.

“Ila Devi did not appreciate this alteration and she requested Sage Vasishtha to somehow make her Sudyumna, permanently. Sage Vasishtha made her perform Ashwamedha during the month in which she was a male. Pleased with that sacrifice, Lord Hari conferred permanent manhood on Ila.

“Oh Lord, such is the greatness of this sacrifice. Please go ahead with the performance of this Great Sacrifice and while doing so, please make all the people aware of the manner in which it should be performed.”

Srirama summoned Sage Vasishtha, Vamadeva and other Munis and informed them about his decision to perform Ashwamedha. He directed Lakshmana to send invitations of Sugreeva, Vibheeshana, Devarishi Narada and all the people, all the kings on earth, and Brahmins possessing a variety of skills and knowledge. He got a sprawling Yajna Shala constructed in the Naimisha Forest on the banks of Gomati River. He ordered that all the materials be made ready for the sacrifice.

Thus the preparations for the extravagant Ashwamedha began.

SUMMARY: It is not surprising at all in the matter of Sri Madhwacharyaru, an incarnation of Lord Vayu, as he is the one whose remembrance by anyone destroys the ocean of all miseries that arise in human life, who is always meditated by Lord YDama (Death God), SheSha (Serpent), Rudra and other Gods and secure celestial radiation, accompanied by the diamond sparkle.

What is not surprising? It is mentioned in the previous stanza where a king wanted to order Sri Madhwacharyaru to dig the earth for constructing a water body. However, because of the mystic powers of Sri Madhwaru, the king dug the earth.
